Compensation & Benefits
Competitive Salaries
General Teacher Salaries
For teachers who are certified and/or who have a master's
degree in education, starting salaries at MAPCS generally
match District of Columbia Public Schools' starting salaries.
Our step and merit pay system is slightly different than at
DCPS and most large school districts. For high-performing
teachers, our step/merit system allows for greater year-to-year
advancement than at DCPS. This is because returning teachers
earn cost of living increases and are eligible for merit increases
of between $0 and $1,000, based on performance.
Non-Certified Teachers
At MAPCS, we do hire talented individuals who come to us uncertified
or without a master's degree. For these instructors, starting
pay is less than for teachers with certification or master's
degrees, but their salaries increase when they obtain their
certification or master's degree.
Other Staff
For mental health professionals, school leaders, and other
staff, salaries are competitive with similar positions in
the area.
Comprehensive Benefits
Health Care
All staff is offered basic health care coverage by the school. The school will pay 80% of the monthly premiums. This coverage applies to staff members and their families. The school sponsors one health care package; our provider is currently CareFirst BlueChoice. PPO and Out-of-Service plans are also available.
403(b) Plan
The school has established a 403(b) plan with TIAA-CREF to which employees may contribute. The school will contribute 2% of an employee’s salary once the staff member has worked for See Forever/Maya Angelou for one year.
Computer Purchase Plan
Once a full-time staff member has worked at the school for
three months, the school will pay 1/3 of the cost, up to $500,
of a computer. The computer may be a laptop or traditional
PC, and may be for home use.
Vacation Schedule
Teachers at Maya Angelou have a vacation schedule that is
generally aligned with teachers in surrounding jurisdictions.
However, at Maya Angelou teacher training typically starts
earlier in the summer than at many schools, and there are
a few days during the year when Maya Angelou is open when
traditional schools are closed and vice versa.
