Data Manager (Director)
See Forever Foundation (SFF or See Forever), located in Washington, D.C., is recruiting a Data Manager/Director to start as soon as possible. The application period will remain open until the position is filled. Reporting to the Director for Academics and Principal Support, the incumbent will be responsible for the collection, analysis, and monitoring of data pertaining to student achievement.

Background
See Forever opened in 1997, with the mission to create learning environments where young people who have not been successful in traditional schools will reach their potential. We want our students to develop the academic, social, and employment skills they need to build rewarding lives and promote positive change in their communities. In the fall of 1998, SFF secured a charter to operate the Maya Angelou Public Charter School (Maya Angelou, MAPCS or SFF/MAPCS). In 2006, SFF/MAPCS received accreditation from Middle States Association.

See Forever currently runs three Maya Angelou Public Charter School (MAPCS) campuses in Washington, D.C.  The oldest, an alternative high school, is located in the historic Shaw district at 9th and T Streets NW. A second alternative high school, operated in a partnership with DC Public Schools, is located at 57th and East Capitol Streets NE.  The third, an alternative middle school, is at 4650 Benning Road, S.E. The latter two are housed in DC Public Schools facilities. In July 2007, we also assumed operation of the Oak Hill Academy in Laurel, MD, the education program at the District of Columbia’s long-term secure facility for youth who have been adjudicated delinquent. We have also opened an affiliated Transition Center to assist youth in adjusting to the community after their release from the Oak Hill facility.

The education program at the See Forever/Maya Angelou Public Charter School has a number of unique features. Classes are small, and at the high school they range in size from 5-15 students. The middle school has an average class size of 22 students. School days are extended, where possible, running into the evening. Supplementary tutorial enrichment occurs in the evenings and/or on Saturdays. We support year-round school activities for students. Our schools have a strong mental health component as well, providing group counseling to all students and individual counseling as needed. Our high school students at Maya Angelou also have the chance to learn job skills while on paid work assignments.

Our results show that we are achieving our goals. Our Maya Angelou students graduate at an average rate exceeding 85%. More of our graduates complete colleges and/or other post-secondary schools than do their peers. Moreover, our students develop the strength and resiliency necessary to succeed when they graduate. Some are pursuing careers in education, social work, computer science, nursing and public service.

The Position and its Primary Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director for Academics and Principal Support, the Data Manager will analyze data and work with campus principals and faculty to understand assessment data and to generate appropriate follow-up action. The incumbent will serve as the data leader for the collection and management of district and school-based assessment programs and will provide training to campus staff in using data to enhance and engage student learning; to certify ethical practices at the campus level; and to systematize data across campuses. Other principal duties include:

  • Assisting with the monitoring of student achievement through the use of quarterly data;
  • Interpreting test results and providing written interpretation and analysis for campuses and individual teacher use;
  • Analyzing campus and district assessments to assist school leaders in data-driven decision-making; in the development of school improvement plans; and in monitoring the Accountability Plan;
  • Generating graphic visualizations of data in efforts to assist school leaders in making information meaningful;
  • Organizing and managing data for all standardized testing for campuses, including training of staff, maintaining accurate and complete records, meeting established deadlines; and
  • Training staff in the use of data software and other resources to support the implementation of standardized assessments across subject areas within the grade-levels, i.e. DCPS standards, teacher tool kits, sample assessments, and scoring rubrics.

Desired Skills, Characteristics, and Experience
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and have had at least five years of experience in leading teams and in interpreting and presenting data in an educational setting.

Additional qualifications include:

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, verbal and written;
  • The ability to create informative visualizations of data to support campus staff with evaluation and planning efforts;
  • Knowledge of all regulations, data reporting policies and procedures as listed in COMAR;
  • Extensive knowledge of basic software applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and statistical software (i.e. PowerSchool, Filemaker Pro);
  • Experience in a leadership position (i.e., grade-level, department, or committee chair, current school test coordinator); and
  • Training in data-driven instruction.
