Celebrating Heroes and Sheroes

Thursday, April 30, 2009
at the historic Lincoln Theatre, Washington, DC

At this year's fundraiser, Dr. Angelou hosted a crowd of 1,200+ at the Historic Lincoln Theatre in Washington, DC to celebrate our first-ever "Maya Way Award." The event was a celebration of what our school community refers to as the “Maya Way.” In our view, all students – those adjudicated delinquent or those who have been unsuccessful in traditional school settings for a myriad of reasons – need support in viewing the world as full of opportunities for academic, personal and professional advancement; that’s the Maya Way.

The Maya Angelou Public Charter School has many heroes and sheroes – students, parents, board members, individuals, funders, corporations, community partners and staff – who work everyday to help at-risk students in Washington, D.C. reach their potential and prepare for college, career and a lifetime of success.

This year the first-ever “Maya Way” awards were presented to national leaders and local heroes and sheroes who exemplify the courage, compassion, tenacity and strength of our school’s namesake, Dr. Maya Angelou.

Congratulations to this year’s honorees:

The founders of the See Forever Foundation and Maya Angelou Public Charter School:
Reid Weingarten, David Domenici and James Forman, Jr. who received a special Visionary Award.
