On May 9, 2008, the See Forever Foundation/Maya Angelou Public Charter School hosted its eleventh annual signature event featuring the school’s namesake, Dr. Maya Angelou, at the historic Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C. Patti Austin, 2008 Grammy award-winning jazz vocalist and Renee Poussaint, Emmy award-winning journalist, joined former U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman and acclaimed star of film, screen and the Broadway stage Sheryl Lee Ralph, in celebrating Dr. Maya Angelou’s 80th birthday and the 10th anniversary of the Maya Angelou Public Charter School (MAPCS) in Washington, D.C.The event was a momentous occasion honoring Dr. Angelou’s 80th birthday and featuring celebrity guests, alongside the talents of aspiring MAPCS students.
We anticipated hundreds of attendees for this year’s event and were thrilled that we ended the night with a full house, filling the Lincoln Theatre to its maximum capacity! Over 1,200 guests attended our Year of the Phenomenal Woman Celebration – named so in honor of Dr. Angelou’s celebrated poem. Guests included celebrities from across the entertainment fields, national and local politicians, business leaders and other luminaries. Through this event, attendees were given a glimpse into the lives of our students. More importantly, guests were able to appreciate the dedication and commitment our students inspire in us all.
The See Forever Foundation (SFF) is the nonprofit organization that raises funds to support the transformative educational program and socio-mental wraparound services students receive at the MAPCS. All funds raised as a part of the event support the rigorous academic program, relevant course work and important wraparound supports alternative students receive across our campuses. We are grateful to our title sponsor WilmerHale, and other lead sponsors including Plaza Construction, The Random House Publishing Group, DIAGEO, RLJ Development and AOL, for their support of our work to change the ‘at-risk’ proposition for our students, to one of ‘at-promise.
