Host A Student Intern
During the school year,
students are required to participate in weekly workplace learning
experiences (internships) throughout the community. We are
looking for Internship Partners who will host Maya Angelou
student(s) for the academic school year (September - June).
Internship placements will be one (1) day per week for four
(4) to eight (8) hours. Wages are paid to the students by
Maya Angelou Public Charter School. An internship is a work
site experience during which a student - with guidance and
supervision at the workplace - completes a planned series
of activities, set of learning objectives, or project(s) designed
to give broad understanding of a business or occupational
area. By integrating the internship activities or project(s)
at the workplace with school-based learning, the student develops
both job and academic skills.
Role as an Internship
Supervisor
Supervisors
are responsible for ensuring the student receives guidance
during the internship. Some of this guidance would be practical
- how to dress, how to answer the phone, when to take a break.
Other guidance would fall into the category of mentoring -
coaching a student through difficult moments, listening and
showing interest in his/her progress. Finally, the supervisor
would be responsible for assessing the intern's performance
and giving feedback about his/her accomplishments and suggestions
for improvement.
