At Maya Angelou, we
are aware that there is a world beyond our walls for which
we are preparing our students. To help our students get ready,
requires a lot more than what our staff alone can provide.
We need the help of the larger community.
The success of our programming, particularly
in the afternoon and evenings, is contingent on the generosity
of individuals who give their time to support our students.
We hope you will explore these pages to learn how you can
help contribute to our mission.
Ms. Ariza, one of last year's Volunteers of the Term, had
this to say about why she keeps coming back year after year.
"I'm a huge fan of Dr. Angelou's.
I'll do anything with her name attached! Also, the obvious
dedication of the staff inspires me. They are at the school
day AND night because they absolutely believe in what they're
doing, because they are sincerely making a difference in
the lives of the students. Their commitment is incredible.
Who wouldn't want to be around people like that? And I really
hope the students understand what an inspiration THEY are.
They choose every day to go in to school, which means they
choose every day to do something positive for themselves.
THAT motivates me, makes me want to be there for them. Even
if I have a bad day at work, I know I'll get there, see
Michele, and feel so much better by the time I leave."
