Seeing Forever eNewlsetter

At Maya Angelou, we are aware that there is a world beyond our walls for which we are preparing our students. Helping our students get ready requires a lot more than what our staff alone can provide. We need the help of the larger community. The success of our efforts, particularly our extended day/extended year programming, is contingent on the generosity of individuals who give their time to support our students. We hope you will explore these pages to learn how you can help contribute to our mission.

Ways to Get Involved

Join Circle of Friends
You can help by joining our Circle of Friends
While 67% of our funding comes from public charter school funds, the balance is raised from private sources, including corporations, foundations and people like you. Through a yearly donation of $1,500, friends support enrichment classes, tutoring and mentoring, career and college preparatory classes, summer experience and transition programs, and more! Join our Circle of Friends as an individual or recruit members of your personal and professional circle to join you in making this yearly donation supporting the Maya Angelou Public Charter School.

As a Circle of Friends member, you will have special opportunities to meet and build relationships with our students through special activities, updates, cards, and participation in school events. Your name will be proudly featured across our campuses and in promotional materials as a member of the Maya Angelou Public Charter School’s Circle of Friends! Most importantly, your support will help us provide the holistic services that we know work for our students. Your involvement – as a friend and sponsor – will make a positive difference in the lives of a DC teen working to change the at-risk position to an “at-promise” proposition.

Tutor or Mentor a Student
Help expand the pool of caring adults who exert a positive influence in our students’ lives.
Take this opportunity to assist our students with their daily assignments in core academic subjects – English, Math, Social Studies and Science. Tutors may serve one or more evenings a week, Monday through Thursday. In addition, daytime tutors in specific skills areas, such as reading or basic math, are always welcome. Contact the See Forever Foundation at (202) 797-8250 to learn more about tutoring and mentoring opportunities across our campuses for the 2009-2010 school year.

Be an Enrichment Teacher
Enrich the lives of our students by sharing your practical knowledge and skills.
At Maya Angelou, enrichment opportunities provide our students with exposure to subjects beyond their regular course of study. These classes also afford adults from the community a way to share their talents, skills and strengths with our students. Examples of classes are: Capoeira, Chess, Debate, Music Production, Street Law, S.W.A.T (Science With A Twist), etc. Enrichment classes take place after the traditional school day's core classes. For more information about our enrichment program and opportunities to volunteer during the 2009-2010 school year, contact the See Forever Foundation at (202) 797-8250.

Host a Student Intern
Support our students in developing workplace skills by hosting a student intern.
During the school year, MAPCS students gain hands-on learning experiences in the workplace by serving as interns at a variety of organizations, businesses, and agencies across Washington, D.C. The See Forever Foundation/Maya Angelou Public Charter School supports student salaries and intern site partners host our students throughout the academic year (September – June), one day per week, for 4-8 hours. Help our students gain workplace experience and acquire a broad understanding of a business or occupational area by hosting a Maya Angelou student intern. To learn more about this program or to register your workplace as a host site, contact the See Forever Foundation at (202) 797-8250.
