Be A Volunteer Tutor
During any given week, more than 270 volunteers
come to See Forever and the Maya Angelou PCS to work directly
with students in our evening tutoring program. The volunteers
assist students with their daily assignments in core academic
subjects -- English, math, and social studies. Yet the value
of the program clearly extends beyond homework assistance.
Among
other things, our tutoring program expands the pool of caring
adults who can exert a positive influence in our students'
lives. In addition, many tutors serve as informal mentors
to our students.
Our tutors often find that they both make
a difference in our students' lives and learn from them as
well. One tutor describes her experience:
I have been tutoring at Maya Angelou PCs
since 1999 when I first moved to the DC Metro area. One of
my friends from college was tutoring and told me about the
program, and I decided to check it out. I first worked with
[a young man], and he made it a joy to come each week. . .
. He worked very hard, and I was and am very proud of him
when he shows that he is trying to reach his full potential.
. . . After the first year, he gave me a picture of [Dr.]
Maya Angelou from the fundraiser and signed it; he referred
to me as "the best tutor he ever had." Even if I
am the only tutor that he worked with at that time, it still
meant a lot to me.
Tutoring for all students takes place Monday
through Thursday, from 6:10-7:15 p.m. Most tutors sign up
for one night a week, and most work consistently with particular
students. The school also welcomes daytime tutors who can help
students in specific skill areas, such as reading or basic
math.
We hold weekly orientation sessions for prospective
tutors. For more information, please contact
