To the Class of 2008,
On a late summer’s day in 2004, we opened the doors to the Evans campus and greeted a bunch of intelligent, high-energy freshmen. It seemed as if this day – their completion of our program and graduation from high school – would never come. These scholars are funny, visionary, quirky, academically gifted, insightful, resilient, demanding, and focused. They are also – all – headed to college.
Over the last few years, we have pushed these scholars as they pushed themselves – sometimes watching them stumble, recover and stumble again. Each time, they collectively picked themselves off, dusted themselves off and recommitted themselves to the goal of high school graduation and college enrollment. This year’s graduates met and surpassed our expectations for them, completing and submitting over 160 college applications and earning over $1.2 million in college scholarships.
Four years ago, we opened the doors to the Evans Campus. Today, Maya Angelou-Evans Campus Class of 2008, I am honored and pleased to open the doors to the world.
