To the Class of 2008,
Ten years ago, MAPCS started as a small learning community of a few students, educators and supporters serving kids ignored by other schools. These students have been part of our fastest period of evolution, yet they embody the principles of our founding days. We walk the halls giving and receiving love, leave every class challenged to improve, and work late when other schools have long been closed. We are still a close-knit community with high academic expectations, serving students who thrive in our unique setting.
The class of 2008 is a special one. This year’s senior class is the first to graduate all having taken Advanced Placement courses. These students have outpaced their predecessors in college acceptance, and in earning financial aid dollars. These students have already represented us well on college campuses by speaking to classes, touring universities up and down the east coast, some having already earned college credit. We were moved by their words and stories at the Year of the Phenomenal Woman Celebration, where we caught just a glimpse of the abilities they have honed in while taking the most challenging array of classes we have ever offered.
Seniors, you make us proud. It is my hope that as you ascend, you will return often to nurture our heritage. To quote Dr. Angelou, “You are the best we have. You are all we have. You are what we have become.” Now, even as you continue your education, it is your responsibility to return to our halls and prepare future students to match your accomplishments and go one step beyond.
These young people’s lives are stories of their own dedication and extraordinary support from teachers, counselors and administrators. As we learned in our debates, struggles, celebrations and journeys together, education is communal with each member giving and receiving knowledge. Although we celebrate the accomplishments of our seniors today, it is hard to say who has gained more in their years with us. Seniors, you have our congratulations and gratitude.
