Applying to Maya Angelou public charter school
MAPCS has an open enrollment policy. Students are accepted regardless of background or academic record on a first-come, first-served basis. If more students apply than spaces are available, students are admitted by lottery.
There are 4 Steps
in the MAPCS Application Process, please read them fully
and carefully.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Complete a student
application packet. Please remember to have your parent/guardian
sign the guardian page. |

Gather ALL of the
"required documents" from the check list
included with the application. Please
note: Your application
WILL NOT BE REVIEWED until all documents are submitted
to the registrar. |

Turn in
application packet and required documents
to campus registrar.
Please
note: Applications
are considered in the order that they are received
AND completed. |

Return completed application
to the campus in which you are applying. |

| Complete applications
received after April 3rd will be considered
on a space available basis. We encourage students
and guardians to complete and submit applications
after the lottery date. |

What grade levels are
offered at MAPCS?
MAPCS Middle School offers 6th, 7th and 8th grades. MAPCS Shaw and Evans high school campuses offer 9th,
10th, 11th and 12th grades.
How old do I have to
be to enroll at MAPCS?
Students attending our middle school campus must be 10 year of age by September 30 of the year in which they are enrolling. Our middle school cannot accept any student who is 15 years of age or older at the time of enrollment.
Students attending our high school campuses must be 14 years of age or older by September 30 of the year in which they are enrolling. Our high schools cannot accept any student who is 18 years of age or older at the time of enrollment.
Can I attend MAPCS Shaw
or Evans even if I have not passed the 9th grade?
Yes, if you are at least 14 years old we will
work with you and your family to decide whether
transitioning into MAPCS is right for you.
Can I come to MAPCS
just for my senior year?
No, students must attend MAPCS for at least two
years. If you are interested in starting as a
junior, you may discuss this option with the admissions
counselor.
Do I have to be a DC
resident to apply?
Yes, because we are a DC Public Charter School,
you and your legal guardian must be DC residents
to apply. (You will have to bring in proof of
residency).
When is the deadline
for applications?
April 26, 2008 is our deadline and lottery date.
If spaces are still available after this date,
applications go on a waiting list and will be
considered in the order in which they are received.
The admissions counselor will discuss with you
and your guardian where your name falls on the
list and whether you should enroll at another
school. |

OVERVIEW

You will be contacted
to attend an overview session. This is a required
meeting for you and your legal guardian. |
| 2. |
You will learn more
about the school and your guardian will fill out
our paperwork. |
| 3. |
You will also complete
a short placement test. |
| 4. |
You and
your guardian will schedule a time to come back
for your second overview. |
| 5. |
You and your guardian
will complete a second overview. This is
a one-on-one meeting with one of our school counselors. |
| 6. |
Your parent/guardian
will bring back the completed packet of paperwork. |

ACCEPTANCE

will contact you with further details. |

ORIENTATION
| 1. |
Our orientation program is mandatory and will provide you the opportunity to learn more about your campus. More details will come later in the summer about
dates and times. |
