See Forever Plans for Signature Event with Dr. Maya Angelou Confirms Key Sponsors and Legendary Artist
by Ingrid Padgett, SFF/MAPCS Development Director
Plans are brewing for the See Forever Foundation/Maya Angelou Public Charter School’s May 9th fundraiser featuring our school’s namesake, Dr. Maya Angelou. This year, we will be “Cooking up a Future” with a focus on celebrating several milestones within the SFF/MAPCS community:
- It’s Dr. Maya Angelou’s 80th birthday, and we are pleased that for the eleventh consecutive year she will join us for our signature fundraising event.
- The Maya Angelou Public Charter School is celebrating its tenth year of transformative work with at-promise students in the District of Columbia.
- The 2007-2008 school year has been a tremendous year of growth within our once small organization. This year we assumed management of a new campus at Oak Hill Academy and expanded the offerings of the Maya Angelou Public Charter School with the opening of our first middle school campus.
As a part of this year’s event, we will honor these milestones to raise program funds in support of at-promise students in Washington, D.C. We are pleased to announce here the phenomenal partnerships with WilmerHale, AOL and RLJ Development who will serve as sponsors of this year’s signature fundraiser.
Join us on May 9, 2008 at the historic Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C. for our “Year of the Phenomenal Woman” Celebration. The theme for this year’s fundraiser derives from one of Dr. Angelou’s most celebrated poems, “Phenomenal Woman.”Our fundraiser will be a momentous occasion featuring celebrity guests, alongside the talents of aspiring SFF and MAPCS students. We are pleased to announce that we have confirmed legendary 2008 Grammy winning vocalist Patti Austin, as our mistress of ceremonies for this event. In addition, there are some special celebrity surprises in the works as SFF works to involve luminaries who are a part of Dr. Angelou’s “inner circle.”
See Forever’s fundraiser will continue to celebrate the achievements of the students and alumni of the See Forever Foundation and the Maya Angelou Public Charter School. SFF/MAPCS. Executive Director Cynthia Robbins said, “The connection that Dr. Angelou has with our students is an astounding testimony to her commitment to youth. Our students, staff and entire community are dedicated to celebrating and honoring our namesake during this our 10th year and her 80th year – Milestone birthdays for both!”
This year’s celebration will highlight student achievement in support of our work to continually bring opportunities and experiences for success and growth to DC youth. We hope you will join us.
