See Forever’s Oak Hill Scholars Participate in GED Cap and Gown Commencement Ceremony
by Adriana Rodriguez, Alumni Support Coordinator
The Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s annual GED Cap and Gown Commencement Ceremony was held on June 25 at the University of the District of Columbia. We are pleased that three Oak Hill scholars joined a total of 555 adult learners in achieving an important educational milestone by successfully passing their GED exams during the period June 1, 2007 to May 31, 2008.
As a part of the ceremony, the Rev. Dr. Louis M. Anthony, Senior Pastor of Washington’s Metropolitan Wesley African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church delivered the commencement address. State Superintendent for Education Deborah A. Gist shared her delight in seeing so many adult learners in the District of Columbia earning their GEDs. In her commencement remarks, Gist noted the fact that, “These students recognize that the way to economic self-sufficiency is through education.” This is a sentiment shared by See Forever/Maya Angelou Co-Founder David Domenici who is currently serving as principal at our Oak Hill campus and spearheading expanded functions and services at the transition center designed to support Oak Hill scholars as they transition back into our communities – offerings that will serve as a gateway to life success for students transitioning from our Oak Hill Academy and for MAPCS alumni.
To receive a GED certificate, a candidate must pass all five of the required tests in reading, writing, math, science and social studies, amassing a minimum combined score for all five subjects in which he is tested. At SFF/MAPCS, we have a keen awareness of how increased services, particularly at Oak Hill and its affiliated transition center, would permit us to transform the lives of the hardest to reach young people, with the type of comprehensive support we have successfully delivered through our school program at Maya Angelou over the past 11 years. We congratulate our Oak Hill scholars and look forward to continuing our efforts to enhancing the competencies and skills of SFF and MAPCS scholars to ensure lifelong success through a holistic approach that emphasizes not just how to make a living, but how to ensure a lifetime of success.
As part of See Forever’s programmatic expansion into postsecondary supports, we are working to formalize partnerships with colleges and universities, career education partners and vocational training programs to enhance the transition options available to all of our students. Our goal is to give our students the opportunity, through proper training, to develop exceptionally marketable skills to ensure that they can either gain employment or further their education. Notable partnerships with Trinity University and the University of the District of Columbia are on track.
