Notes from the Executive Director
Graduation and Growth

Greetings All,

Excitement is in the air at the See Forever Foundation (SFF) and new plans are on the horizon for the Maya Angelou Public Charter School (MAPCS). Right now, we are experiencing a period of rapid growth and development and we have some brief updates about that in this issue of the newsletter. I expect that we will send you some news flashes over the summer about the exciting developments as they unfold.

As we embark on our second decade, I am thrilled that the tenth anniversary of See Forever also marks the first time we've held two commencement exercises for graduating seniors, MAPCS – Evans has its first graduating class and Shaw has another group of graduates heading off to college!

The Maya Angelou-Evans Campus opened its doors in the fall of 2004. Through a partnership with D.C. Public Schools, See Forever was able to provide a home at the DCPS Evans campus, in Ward 7 of the District. Several other supporters provided substantial support that permitted our second campus expansion. They include, Venture Philanthropy Partners and the Walton Family, the Bill & Melinda Gates and the Edna McConnell Clark foundations. Pivotal support was also garnered through SFF's partnership with CharityWorks – this support was a critical component of the planning, development and sprucing up of the Evans campus.

Please join the See Forever Foundation and the Maya Angelou Public Charter School at commencement exercises on June 26, 2007 at the Carlos Rosario Auditorium. Get the details from our feature story highlighting graduation and the Class of 2007!

Interested in our summer plans? Here's what at the top of our agenda:

Opening New Campuses

  • This summer, under David Domenici's leadership, See Forever will assume management of the Oak Hill School, located in the long-term secure facility for D.C. youth who have been adjudicated delinquent. The summer program will begin in July and school will open in September.
  • In September, Co-Principals Rashida Waters and Zakiya Sackor will open our first MAPCS - middle school campus, east of the Anacostia River. Right now, we are recruiting 80-100 sixth grade students link for middle school and we have a few more staff positions for this campus.
  • In addition, we are recruiting students and a few more staff members for the 2007-2008 school year for both our high school campuses. For more information on student enrollment, visit our Student Admission bulletin and to learn more about teacher recruitment, visit our Career page.

Through rigor, relevance and relationships, we will continue to help young people pursue lives of productivity and promise. For a Glimpse of Life at MAPCS, check out this special section of our e-newsletter celebrating the 26 rising seniors from our Evans campus who were selected to be a part of the D.C. Achievers Scholarship Program - a selection that comes with the promise of a full college scholarship to students who successfully complete the program. Also, take a few moments to enjoy a recap of our tenth annual Cooking Up a Future event with Dr. Angelou and to learn more about new board members and staff who we are pleased to welcome to SFF & MAPCS.

Thank you for being a part of the See Forever Foundation & the Maya Angelou Public Charter School community. We need your continued interest and critical support as we work diligently to enhance the opportunities available to our students. Have a great summer!
