Maya Way Celebrations Huge Success!

When Dr. Maya Angelou is asked how one can support her efforts, she often responds, “Support my school!” Yesterday many did just that by joining her at the Oak Hill Youth Center in Laurel, Md. Thousands more were Dr. Angelou’s guests that evening at our annual fundraiser.

Dr. Angelou, in town as she is each year for our spring fundraiser, told dozens of our Oak Hill scholars that she was not all that different from them. “Life isn’t about taking back, she said, but adding to what already exists.” As our scholars spoke and beamed as she recognized each one of them, you could tell they were getting the lesson of a lifetime and a bit of ‘mother-wit’ from a renowned poet, author and civil rights activist who cared enough about them to be present in their lives.

At our evening fundraiser, Dr. Angelou expressed a similar message to a crowd of 1,200+ at the Historic Lincoln Theatre. The event was a celebration of what our school community refers to as the “Maya Way.” In our view, all students – those adjudicated delinquent or those who have been unsuccessful in traditional school settings for a myriad of reasons – need support in viewing the world as full of opportunities for academic, personal and professional advancement; that’s the Maya Way.

At See Forever/Maya Angelou, our students need people who can take the time to be present in their lives. Please consider the many ways you can help our students by being a hero or shero in their lives as a contributor, volunteer or advocate.

How Can You Help?
Contribute
– Whenever possible, consider a tax-deductible contribution in support of our efforts – your dollars can help high school dropouts transform themselves into college graduates

Volunteer – As often as you can, give the gift of time. Help us in making a difference in the lives of our “at-promise” students by volunteering as a tutor, mentor, or internship host site supervisor.

Advocate – Remember, just one voice has the power to make a great impact. One voice joined by many, has the power to create everlasting change. Advocate for youth who deserve the guarantee of a promising future.
