Soars in Growth Mode

Greetings All,

With the 2007-2008 school year in full swing, the See Forever Foundation (SFF) and Maya Angelou Public Charter School (MAPCS) are experiencing an exciting period of growth and organizational development. Our program has expanded significantly since last school year. In addition to our two high school campuses, MAPCS-Shaw at 9th and T Streets NW and MAPCS-Evans at 57th and East Capitol NE, we now have a third MAPCS campus, our first serving middle school students in southeast DC. In addition, SFF also now operates the extended-day educational program at Oak Hill, the long-term secure facility for DC youth who have been adjudicated delinquent. With this growth, SFF/MAPCS now serves 475 youth!

Substantial new resources support SFF/MAPCS during this growth mode, including a major second grant/investment from the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation of $2 million over a 22-month period. Last year, we received a supplemental grant of nearly $1 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Exceptional growth over the past year has allowed us to maintain and improve upon our high school campuses, open a middle school in a remarkably transformed DC Public Schools (DCPS) facility, and return to our roots of working with teens involved in the juvenile justice system. With all this growth comes the need to build new systems and identify new resources. We are thrilled to have the continued and deepened support of the Clark  and the Gates foundations as we aim to sharpen our systems and refine our strategies to help even more 'at-promise' youth reach their potential. Additionally, we are pleased to report that partnerships with corporations, committed funders, new funding partners and local/state/Federal government entities have allowed us to support renovations at our campuses as well as the hallmark programs like our wrap-around social and mental health services, after-school programs, transition and college access programming, and alumni support.

Key priorities for the 2007-2008 year are to develop the resources, systems, staffing, and infrastructure to support our larger learning community. Please find out more about our community by reading the brief updates here about:

Thank you for being a part of the See Forever Foundation/Maya Angelou Public Charter School community. We all believe that this will be the best year ever. We look forward to your continued interest, involvement and support as we amplify our efforts to serve more young people more effectively.

With sincere gratitude,
Cynthia
