Life After MAPCS
Where are they now?
MAPCS Class of 2007 Graduation Update
Thanks to See Forever/Maya Angelou Public Charter School Alumni Support Coordinator, Adriana Rodriguez for submitting this article.
Graduation this year was quite a celebration! The Maya Angelou Public Charter School (MAPCS) Alumni Association welcomed 18 graduates from the Shaw campus and 13 graduates from the first graduating class of our second high school, MAPCS-Evans. The Maya Way is to make school personalized and to foster student achievement and growth. We live this even as we prepare to say “goodbye” to our students. At both graduation ceremonies, students either read their own reflections or had a tribute read to them by a staff member. The student reflections and staff tributes were stories of overcoming countless challenges that did not leave a dry eye in the audience.
MAPCS-Shaw Campus Graduate Davita Lawrence remarked on things that she and many of her peers were told in the past during her student reflection saying, “[I] was not supposed to succeed. I was supposed to be just like the others, another statistic...” Shattering that myth, this fall Davita became part of a different statistic when she began her studies at Trinity University in Washington, D.C. She was also the recipient of one of our special awards, The Rudiger Dornbusch Scholarship.
Davita is among the 80% of the class of 2007 MAPCS graduates who will be enrolled in college this school year. Another member of the MAPCS Class of 2007, Damien Goines, who also started college this fall attending Marshall Community & Technical College in Huntington, WV, concluded his reflection by stating that, “[I] have decided I want to be proud of myself, too.” Well, the MAPCS family is proud and we congratulate all of our 2007 graduates and salute those who are now attending the following schools: Allegany College of Maryland, Benedict College, Delaware State University, Marshall Community & Technical College, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, Trinity University, University of the District of Columbia, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, University of New Haven and Virginia Commonwealth University.
Stay tuned for more updates on the MAPCS Class of 2007 and look forward to celebrating the phenomenal achievements of the up-and-coming MAPCS Class of 2008.
