Dedicates New Alternative Middle School on November 15, 2007
The See Forever Foundation/Maya Angelou Public Charter School (SFF/MAPCS), a multi-campus learning community designed to meet the unique needs of urban students, has opened a new alternative middle school campus. The MAPCS middle school is located in the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) Fletcher Johnson Educational Center, in Southeast DC, Ward 7.
“Our one-year lease with DCPS permitted us open on time this fall. This new campus supports our shared vision for expanding programs and services to include a younger alternative student population,” said SFF/MAPCS Executive Director Cynthia Robbins. Robbins went on to observe that, “Because Fletcher Johnson Educational Center is about a mile away from our MAPCS-Evans high school campus, this is a unique opportunity to create educational continuity and synergy between our alternative middle and high school programs. We love being in this neighborhood and have been overwhelmed by the need for our type of program. We look forward to expanding our partnership with DCPS that governs MAPCS-Evans to include the middle school level as well. The new MAPCS-Middle School is under the leadership of Co-principals Rashida Waters and Zakiya Sackor – former assistant principals at high school campuses of the Maya Angelou Public Charter School and graduates of the heralded Teach for America and New Leaders for New Schools programs.
On Thursday, November 15, SFF/MAPCS will host a dedication ceremony at the new middle school located at: 4650 Benning Road, S.E. School tours will be conducted from 10:30am – 11:00 am. A short program that will include remarks from school leaders, Dr. Maya Angelou’s grandson and participation from the DCPS Chancellor Michelle Rhee will begin at approximately 11:00am. Key long-term supporters of SFF/MAPCS and a host of other dignitaries and educational leaders from throughout the city; including DC Mayor Adrian Fenty, have been invited. The school will also host the Leadership Greater Washington ‘Education Day’ Program at its middle school campus on November 15. Concurrent sessions sponsored by LGW will focus on school system reforms, with a spotlight on Washington, DC and will address other education policy issues.
We cordially invite the public to attend dedication ceremonies for the Maya Angelou Public Charter School, Middle School Campus on November 15, 2007.
