Career Opportunities
We will be hiring a number of staff to help us make the Oak Hill Academy a national model and the best school any of our students have ever attended.

We are looking for staff who will:
  • Create a school culture of high expectations for our students.
  • Build positive, meaningful relationships with students.
  • Help all students find their strengths and talents.
  • Reflect upon and regularly review data to improve our program and student outcomes.
  • Participate in a range of extracurricular activities, including overnight retreats, group outings, and family- and community-based events.
  • Bring to the Oak Hill Academy the energy, passion, and flexibility we need to start a new school and build a culture of achievement.

Special Expectations
In order to help us accomplish our goals, we have some special expectations for all staff working on the Oak Hill Project. We will ask staff to:

  • Commit to mutual respect, trust and nonviolence: The Oak Hill Academy will be a place where we work together, where we build trust, and a place where we will all feel safe, secure, and cared for. It will be a peaceful place. Staff will need to be prepared to live and speak nonviolently in all that we do, and to relentlessly challenge our students to adhere to nonviolence as a lifestyle.
  • Expect the unexpected: The Oak Hill Academy is immense in its scope and vision. All staff need to come to work every day committed fully to the Academy and our students, knowing that in spite of our best efforts, the unexpected will happen, and that it is our job as adults and staff, to keep up our faith, to maintain our composure, and to never, ever give up on our students.
  • Join extracurricular activities, outings, and team-building exercises: As mentioned above, staff with the Oak Hill Academy will be asked to participate in a range of activities that often are not considered part of school, or traditional school staff responsibilities, but which are essential to our students' success. Our staff's participation in these activities builds relationships and trust with students. Staff will participate as advisors to small teams, travel with and supervise students on off-site outings, and participate in team building exercises including ropes courses, community service projects, and staff-student competitions.
  • Join Saturday morning study groups: Staff will be asked to work one Saturday morning every six weeks, from 8am-12noon. Staff members are encouraged to bring family members with them. Day care will be provided for young children, if possible.
  • Work at both sites: Most staff will work primarily at either the Oak Hill Campus, located within the Oak Hill detention center in Laurel Maryland, or at the Transition Center, which will be located within the District of Columbia. However, all staff will spend some time working at both locations, and will need to be flexible about their location placement.
  • Emphasize literacy and reading: All staff will work to improve our students’ reading, writing and literacy skills. This will entail working with students during established literacy block times, as well as integrating literacy strategies into all aspects of our work.
  • Work Hours: At the Oak Hill Campus, we will be running school from 8:00am until 6:00pm Monday through Friday, as well as on Saturday mornings. The Transition Center hours will likely be from 8:00am until 4:00pm. Most staff positions will run from either 7:30am until 4:00pm or from 10:00am until 6:30pm, Monday through Friday. Upon hiring, staff will select one ‘shift’ or the other.
