Reading Specialist

The See Forever Foundation, located in Washington, D.C., is recruiting a Reading Specialist for the school we are operating at the District’s long-term secure detention facility for youth who have been adjudicated delinquent. This facility is called Oak Hill. In partnership with the District’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, we are operating a new school which we think will become a national model for educating youth who have been involved in the juvenile justice system.
The general function of the Reading Specialist is to participate in assessing student reading and literacy needs and achievements, and to provide direct reading instruction to small groups of students. The Reading Specialist will also assist in providing training and support to all staff, leading to literacy integration throughout the curriculum, and will assist in developing and managing the Literacy Block program in which all students and staff participate.
Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Assessing student reading and literacy needs and achievements
- Assisting in the design and programming for literacy blocks
- Providing support and consultation to teaching staff to build literacy strategies across curriculum areas
- Working individually with students needing the expertise of a reading specialist
- Assessing individual learning styles and then adapting teaching methods to fit
- Having thoughtful approaches to teaching concepts and sparking student interest while also imparting essential factual knowledge
- Participating in interdisciplinary team meetings for all students
- Modeling and contributing to a school culture of hope and high expectations for achievement.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in English or Reading Specialist certification preferred.
- Must have or be eligible for certification.
- Experience in working with incarcerated or at-risk youth.
- Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies.
- Highly-qualified as stipulated by NCLB.
- An unyielding belief that with the appropriate supports, coupled with high expectations, all students can significantly improve their academic skills and develop pro-social and culturally normative behaviors that will enable them to succeed in school and beyond.
- Firm belief that all students have strengths and talents and that a good teacher helps students find these and use them to address weaknesses and overcome fears.
