Our Mission
The mission of See Forever at the Oak Hill Academy is to provide a safe, nurturing, and mutually respectful environment that motivates and prepares each student to fulfill his academic or career potential. With the support of a wide circle of caring adults, students will develop the skills they need to make sound decisions and lead rewarding lives.
About Us
In July 2007, the See Forever Foundation assumed management of the school at Oak Hill, the District’s long-term secure facility for youth who have been adjudicated delinquent and committed to DYRS.
Running the Oak Hill Academy is a significant project for us, because See Forever began with Oak Hill. Our founders started their first program for youth who had just been released from Oak Hill and needed tutoring, job training, and mentoring. That program grew into the Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools, which have been recognized locally and nationally as models for educating inner-city youth.
By giving us the opportunity to run this school, the District’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services has committed to a profound change in the education of the City’s most at-risk youth, and we are determined to make Oak Hill a national model for education in the juvenile justice system. At See Forever Foundation and the Maya Angelou Public Charter School, we have had success with court-involved youth, high school dropouts, and students with special needs, and we bring that experience and knowledge to Oak Hill. Over 80% of our graduates go on to college or postsecondary school, more than two times as many stay in college to earn a Bachelor’s Degree, and overall 10% more earn a BA, AA, or certificate than their peers. We expect the Oak Hill project to help students achieve similarly lofty goals. Click here for more detailed look at student results at Maya Angelou.
I had been to Oak Hill twice, and that’s actually how I first found out about See Forever. Once I got out of Oak Hill, my probation officer checked out a couple of alternative high school programs for me because I had been kicked out of my public school over at Roosevelt. We just started looking for something that might help me do the good that I was trying to do in my life. I ended up being one of three members of the first-ever graduating class from Maya Angelou Public Charter School, in 1999.
When I think about what attracted me to the school and what helped me get to graduation and then what helped me get a job and do something with myself, it all comes down to the same thing: See Forever was basically a place where they said, “Listen, we’re going to hold you to high expectations, and we’re going to make sure you have everything you need in order to meet those expectations because we want to see you make it.”
