Meet Team Senegal

Ariel D.
Ariel is a rising junior at our Evans campus and she is a leader, both at home and at school. While the opportunity to travel abroad is something that she has always dreamed about, she is also thrilled about the impact that her travel abroad will have on her young brother. Ariel hopes that traveling to Senegal will be a life-changing experience for her as well as those who see her as an important and positive role model, like her younger brother.
Ashley S.
Ashley comes to us having had a challenging life that could easily devastate many others. Nevertheless, she has always been gregarious, loving and fun. It's hard to capture empirically what a wonderful student she is, and how happy she makes the people around her. She travels a long way to come to school, she encourages her peers when she arrives, and she has always handled adversity and disappointment with grace and kindness.
Ayana W.
Ayana is a resourceful young lady with strong leadership skills. A rising sophomore at our Maya Angelou Public Charter School (MAPCS) Evans campus, she is an excellent writer and has the power to influence many with her influential voice and peer leadership. In addition, Ayana is a member of the girls' basketball team and interns as an assistant in a local daycare. A young lady with much to share about her experiences, Ayana looks forward to engaging with peers in Senegal. Ayana believes that this opportunity will strengthen her leadership skills and that the chance to interact with her West African peers will provide intimate exposure of another culture.

Chanice L.
Chanice has much to say about the opportunity to travel to Senegal. A rising junior at our MAPCS-Shaw campus, Chanice is a student who knows how to speak her mind and she is eager to have the chance to do just that by practicing her French while in Senegal!

A kind and caring student, Chanice is interested in learning about other cultures and is concerned about the striking images she has seen from various African countries. Chanice feels that Team Senegal is a wonderful opportunity to experience firsthand the similarities and differences between the cultures around the world.

Domenique D.
When asked about the importance of the chance to travel to Senegal and participate in the Academy, Domenique - a rising senior at our Maya Angelou Public Charter School (MAPCS) Evans campus - eloquently noted this as a chance to make global friendships and advance his leadership skills. "Domo", as he is affectionately called, is heavily involved in our enrichment program and community service. He has also earned the privilege of being a Peer Counselor for the Aspen Youth Experience. You can learn more about the exciting Achievers Scholarship that Domo earned in our June Newsletter. This trip also supports Domenique's goal to pair his artistic talents with his desire to impact the world. Traveling to Senegal will deepen Domenique's understanding of the world and offer a valuable opportunity for this emerging leader.
Dominique B.
You don't often think of eleventh graders as "seeking to reinvent themselves." However, Dominique, a junior at our Shaw campus, is looking for a fresh start; one that takes him beyond the streets of Washington, D.C. Dominique's life experiences have forced him to grow up in a hurry but he has learned to heed the positive feedback he receives from the people in his life who want him to be successful. This opportunity for Dominique to attend the Summer Leadership Academy of West Africa represents a whole new look on life for a student who has had to stand strong and make tough decisions in the face of adversity.
Louis J.
Louis is a rising tenth grader at our Evans campus. He is articulate, bright and ready to travel the world. As a matter of fact, Louis sees this opportunity to travel to Senegal as a first step on that path! Louis is a role model for his two younger sisters - whom he frequently cares for - and he is an avid reader with the voice of a gifted narrator. Because Louis is such a gifted reader and speaker, he is the only student featured as a speaker as a part of our Freedom School activities - a critical summer and after school enrichment program that supports children and families.
Takeithia P.
Takeithia is an incredibly well-organized and determined young lady who is already focused on how best to pursue her dreams after attaining her high school diploma. Recently, Takeithia was selected to participate in the D.C. Achievers Scholar Program - a public-private partnership that reinforces an ongoing effort by public schools in the District of Columbia to improve high school and college graduation rates; particularly among students living in Wards 7 and 8. This is an important selection that represents Takeithia's hard work, talent and tenacity. As a part of this program, she will participate in a yearlong college-readiness program that will provide her with academic support and new opportunities to succeed in college and beyond.
Tarnisha W.
Tarnisha, a rising senior at our Maya Angelou Public Charter School (MAPCS) Shaw campus, has a positive attitude about life - now that she has learned how to overcome negative influences. She even brings her positive attitude into her internship at HomeGrown Creations, where she gets to participate in all aspects of the store, even creating jewelry! Tarnisha is interested in "what makes people tick" and hopes to major in psychology when she graduates from MAPCS and enrolls in college. Tarnisha is a persistent and creative student. These traits will serve her well - particularly in her leadership development program as part of Team Senegal.
