Projects & Recent Accomplishments
At See Forever, we are engaged in a range of activities in support of our students and our schools.

Current Projects
Below are some of our current priorities:
  • Oakhill Academy
Oak Hill is a significant project for See Forever and for the District of Columbia. By giving us the opportunity to run this school, the District’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services has committed to a profound change in the education of the City’s most at-risk youth, and we are determined to make Oak Hill a national model for education in the juvenile justice system. At See Forever and the Maya Angelou Public Charter School, we have had success with court-involved youth, high school dropouts, and students with special needs, and we bring that experience and knowledge to Oak Hill. Over 80% of our graduates go on to college or postsecondary school, more than two times as many stay in college to earn a Bachelor’s Degree, and overall 10% more earn a BA, AA, or certificate than their peers. We expect the Oak Hill project to help students achieve similarly lofty goals.
  • Developing partnerships with an extended range of colleges and summer program providers so that our students can spend time over the summer at places like outdoor leadership centers, colleges, art programs, and more. Our goal is to enable our students to have an enriching experience offsite over the summer.
  • Advocating at the City Council level for improved funding for after school programming, job training, special education services, and counseling and mental health services.
  • Developing, with the support of the Lumina Foundation and the Commonweal Foundation, two school-based initiatives designed to improve student performance beyond high school. The Lumina funded program is a three-year pilot program designed to provide intensive support to alumni during their first year of college, and the Commonweal funded program is one-year grant to research and provide real-world recommendations on transition programming for students with special needs. We are piloting each of these programs this school-year.

Future Projects
Over the next few months we will start working on some key initiatives. Below are a few of them:

  • Working with community groups to expand the reach the Maya Angelou Public Charter School by opening up to two additional campuses in targeted areas in the City. If you are interested in talking with us about opening a campus in your community, please email Cynthia Robbins at crobbins@seeforever.org
  • Launching an endowment campaign that will ensure long-term funding to our campuses, enabling them to provide the sort of support that our students need, but that extends beyond what is provided by public charter school funding. If you are interested in supporting this ambitious development plan, please email Ingrid Padgett at DevelopmentDept@seeforever.org
  • Working on solving some technical and legislative hurdles that can make it difficult for us to serve our students. An example is to fix the process here in the District so that public charter schools can gain Medicaid reimbursements for mandated mental health services.

Recent Accomplishments
Some of our recent accomplishments include:

  • Received approval from the Public Charter School Board to amend our Charter to include Middle Schools. We will be opening a Middle School Campus in Fall of 2007.
  • Upgrading our multi-site financial management system that will better connect our growing organization with a central platform and ensure responsible financial management.
