CBE Learning at Maya Update: April 2, 2014
“Some of the students in the CBE Pilot Program are making progress and mastering standards in order to progress to the next level. Â There are several students that have a lot of work to do in order to show mastery. Teachers are working hard to implement various strategies to enhance learning in the class. Â Teachers are using data to drive their instruction as well as reflecting on their practices in order to increase student mastery of standards.”-Shantelle Wright-Cunningham
How are students graded or evaluated?
The students are evaluated on each individual competency, and only after they have mastered one do they move on to others.
Did you know?
With competency-based learning or personalized learning, a student is able to skip learning modules entirely if the student can demonstrate they already have achieved mastery. This can be done either through prior learning assessment or formative testing.
Students often find that some individual skills are more difficult to master than others. Competency based learning allows a student to learn those individual skills they find challenging at their own pace, practicing and refining as much as they like. Then, they can move rapidly through other skills to which they are more adept.
Competency based learning is an educational technique that can be applied in many fields and learning environments.
