Our oldest campus, located in the historic Odd Fellows Building in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C., has served as a second home to hundreds of students since the fall of 2000. The building welcomes students from across the city who are looking for a second chance to succeed.
The MAPCS- Shaw High School Campus serves approximately 140 scholars. Most notably, our Shaw Campus was recognized on the list of “Catch-Up” high schools on the Challenge Index developed by Washington Post Report Jay Matthews! This list recognizes high schools with large numbers of impoverished students, based on the number of students relative to the number of seniors taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses and tests.
At See Forever/Maya Angelou we know that acquainting students with college standards helps them build academic muscle for college. Through our “AP for all Initiative,” students who have not always excelled academically are improving their reading, writing, and mathematical skills by taking AP courses and the mandatory AP exams. These efforts support increased confidence among our scholars and help to strengthen our school’s overall college-going culture.
Across the campuses of the Maya Angelou Schools, the instructional program reflects a concerted effort to meet the needs of our unique population of students and to meet the mission and goals of our learning community. Our school program offers small classes, individual instruction, and a wide range of wraparound services that give our students the opportunity to succeed. Tutoring, mentoring, career preparatory programs, enrichment classes, mental health services, residential opportunities, college access and transition support, as well as "real-world" authentic learning experiences help our students set and meet high expectations.
