Approval of 15 Year Charter Renewal Announced by Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation
August 20, 2013 — Today, the Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation announced the renewal of their charter to operateÃÂ alternative education schools dedicated toward serving kidsÃÂ in need throughout Washington, DC. The renewal was granted by the District of Columbia Public Charter School Board during a meeting held on August 19 at the Charter Board’s offices.
The renewal enablesÃÂ the continued operation ofÃÂ the Maya Angelou Learning Center’s High School or MALC (formerlyÃÂ referred to as the Evans Campus),ÃÂ and the Young Adult Learning Center or YALC,ÃÂ dedicated toward enabling young adults aged 17-24 to earn GED and job skills accreditation. The charter renewal is for fifteen years.
According to charter board stipulations, all alternative, charter-based schools must be renewed by the board and determined fit to continue operating based on the ability to run fiscally sound, academically compliant, highly functioning schools that serve target populations in a successful fashion.
Commenting on the renewal status, Maya Angelou Schools CEO Dr. Heather Wathington noted “I’m delighted that our schools remain on track to continueÃÂ assisting some of DC’s most under-servedÃÂ youth and young adults in the most dedicated fashion possible. We will continue workingÃÂ tirelessly toÃÂ enable each of our students to achieve a topnotch education at Maya, and to have the opportunity to pursue university,ÃÂ vocational school or job skills training programs as they graduate from our campuses.”
