Dear See Forever/Maya Angelou Schools Community:
We are writing to inform you of a nationwide data breach involving PowerSchool, a software vendor which provides our Student Information System (“SIS”).![]()
On January 7, 2025, PowerSchool informed See Forever Foundation/Maya Angelou Schools (“Maya Angelou”)
of a cybersecurity incident impacting their systems. PowerSchool informed us that this incident involved
unauthorized access to their data systems globally between the dates of 12/19 and 12/22. During this incident, an unauthorized party used a PowerSchool log-in credential to download data from our SIS, as well as other school districts around the country.![]()
PowerSchool has advised that the customer data taken contains information belonging to members of the Maya Angelou community including, but not limited to, current and former students, teachers, families, and staff members. Information that was obtained includes contact information such as names and addresses, and, for some individuals, personally identifiable information such as Social Security Numbers, medical information, and dates of birth.![]()
PowerSchool advises that they have taken steps to prevent the data from further unauthorized access or misuse and does not anticipate the data being shared or made public. They advised us that they believe the data has been deleted without any further replication or dissemination, and they are working closely with a cybersecurity technology company to monitor the public domain to ensure the data was not and will not be reshared. In
addition, PowerSchool is working with Federal agencies to identify the individual(s) involved. ![]()
PowerSchool has advised that it will be providing credit monitoring to affected adults and identity protection services to affected minors whose Social Security numbers were impacted in accordance with their regulatory and contractual obligations. There will be additional information available in the coming days and/or week as they complete a full investigation.![]()
While PowerSchool continues to investigate, we recommend the following precautionary measures:
Monitor your school accounts: Keep a close eye on your See Forever or Maya Angelou accounts and
report any suspicious activity to the tech support team in your building (staff) or email info@mayaschools.org.![]()
Be cautious of phishing: Be vigilant about unexpected emails or calls requesting personal or school
information.![]()
We are deeply concerned that this breach in the PowerSchool global system compromised some of our data. With PowerSchool’s help, more information and resources will be provided to members of the Maya Angelou community who may be affected by the data breach when it becomes available.![]()
If you have any questions, please call (202) 455-5756 or send an email to info@mayaschools.org.![]()
Sincerely,![]()
