The Organization
Since it began operating in 1997, the See Forever Foundation\’s mission has been to create learning communities in lower income urban areas where all students, particularly those who have not succeeded in traditional schools, can succeed academically and socially. The Foundation operates the Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools in DC, as well as the Maya Angelou Academy at New Beginnings’ secure facility for committed youth in Laurel, MD. Our students develop the academic, social, and employment skills they need to build rewarding lives and promote positive change.

The Touchstone
At the Maya Angelou Schools, the key to our success is rooted in building trusting, respectful and nurturing relationships with each other. We strive to create safe spaces for all to be able to reach their limitless potential. We are at our best when we work together to ensure the unique needs of our community are met. The Opportunity
We are looking for volunteers for tutoring and/or mentoring to help support our students see forever! We are located at 5600 East Capitol Street NE and are metro accessible via the Capitol Heights Metro Station. If you’d like to experience this rewarding volunteer opportunity or would like to learn more please fill out the application and our Volunteer Coordinator will follow up with you.
Our volunteers have made great impacts to our scholars over the years and we greatly appreciate the work that they do. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please read the various support roles below:
Enrichment Teacher
If you have a skill or talent you’d like to share with our students, consider being an enrichment teacher. From videography to yoga, students participate in engaging activities that help to connect what they’ve learned in the classroom to fun activities based on student interest. Classes are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:45 pm- 5:00 pm.
After School Program Tutor
Consider giving an hour of your time one day a week to make a difference in the life of a teen needing a tutor and mentor. As a tutor, you will work one on one with a student to complete assignments and projects, as a mentor, you have the power to positively affect student learning far beyond what they could learn in the classroom. Tutors and mentors make their impact felt on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:45 pm – 5:00 pm.
YALC GED Tutor
The new more rigorous GED exam is aligned with the Common Core and assesses students in reading, grammar, writing, math (computation, algebra, geometry), social studies, and science. We are seeking tutors for all subjects, especially individuals with expertise in math, reading, and writing. Volunteer tutors at the YALC work with students one-on-one or facilitate small groups in the classroom Monday-Thursday and Friday mornings. Our greatest need is Monday-Friday between 10:00 AM-12:00 PM, although we would welcome tutoring support through our academic day.
Residential Program Tutor
Because some students need additional support in order to succeed at school, we provide group-based residential housing for about 20 students who need a safe and secure place to live. Serve as a tutor for an hour in the evening, and help us be a family to a student needing one the most. The hours are flexible Monday through Thursday from 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm.
College and Career Success Program
Are you interested in volunteering at a school? Are you in college? Do you like being around high energy students? Do you like to perform? Do you like to lead? If you answered YES to all questions, then this might be the opportunity for you. The Post-Secondary Success department at Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools is seeking volunteers to help coordinate college and career related exposure activities for students. These activities may range from recruiting dance groups at local colleges to perform for students during lunch time, or putting together a panel of college students to speak to students.
Sharing Experiences: Guest speaker in Future Focus Programming
Our Future Focus Program is helping to transform former high school dropouts to college students. Really! Through Future Focus, students learn about different career options, gain workplace skills, and participate in workshops and transition classes that focus on teaching the skills students need to successfully transition from high school to college and the workforce.
Special Projects
Throughout the year, we have a variety of special projects designed to engage students in fun learning opportunities and additional academic support. From career fairs, to SAT prep, to portfolio panelists, there are lots of ways to support students throughout the year? Even if you only have a little bit of time to give!
