Maya Angelou Academy Speech Competition
The Maya Angelou Academy at New Beginnings hosted its 6th Annual Speech Competition on November 3rd, 2015. The competition, a time-honored event at the Academy, offers scholars a space to voice their stories to a wider audience.
This year, the scholars wrote their speeches on power. Having studied a unit on the subject, the scholars were given only a few guidelines to direct their speech: use at least three rhetorical devices (repetition, anecdote, hyperbole, allusion, hypophora, or analogy) and choose a target audience. The resulting speeches offer a range of thoughts on the subject. Some scholars chose to define power, some spoke of how power can be used and misused, and some scholars chose to discuss the power of their voices and communities. What they all reveal is the incredible strength and intelligence of their authors.
We are proud to announce the winners of the 6th Annual Speech Competition as Malik L. (1st Place), Malik W. (2nd Place), David C. (3rd Place). David C. and Dominique J. were chosen as the Audience Picks. Congratulations to all our scholars for their effort and powerful words!
