The Maya Angelou Public Charter School is in the midst of an exciting and busy Post-Secondary Education Awareness (PSEA) Month. The post-secondary team, led by Mr. Michael Walker, has worked diligently throughout the month to sponsor events and workshops that will help Maya students understand the value of post-secondary education (PSE).
Efforts include a PSE Scavenger Hunt Competition, in which students answered questions about fun facts posted throughout the school to win prizes. The PSE team also accompanied students to the National College Fair, hosted by the National Association of College Admission Counselors, where they attended financial aid workshops and learned about the range of institutions available.

Maya educators have long encouraged students to seek out valuable scholarships. The Class of 2015 was accepted to over one dozen colleges across the country and received nearly $1,000,000 in scholarship funds.  Our PSE team also helped 15 students receive the Achiever’s Scholarship, a coveted $60,000 scholarship awarded to deserving students in the city.

This year, our PSE team is poised to exceed last years’ results with the efforts of PSEA Month. A new cohort of prospective Achievers Scholars recently completed applications and the post secondary team reports that 68% of juniors took the PSAT and 100% of seniors took the SAT in October. Katia Jones, Lead College and Career Readiness Counselor, emphasizes the importance of all these efforts to “build a culture of college-awareness and readiness” at Maya Angelou Schools.

We are incredibly proud of our students’ accomplishments, and equally proud of our educators who dedicate so much time for their students’ success. Post-secondary education is increasingly a requirement for post-graduation success, so we wish all our students a fulfilling Post-Secondary Education Awareness Month!
