Competency Based Education at Maya Update: March 25, 2014
Parents and guardians,
We are now into our fourth and last quarter of the school year. Have you been checking on your childââ¬â¢s progress? What about your progress with understanding what CBE is?
Letââ¬â¢s do a recap.
What does CBE stands for?
Answer: Competency Base Education.
I like to think of it as personalized education.
What is CBE?
Answer: Competency-based education/learning is learnerââ¬âfocused and works naturally with independent study and with the instructor in the role of facilitator. Learners often find different individual skills more difficult than others. This learning method allows a student to learn the individual skills they find challenging at their own pace, practicing and refining as much as they like. Then, they can move rapidly through other skills to which they are more adept.
Another way of looking at CBE is to think of it as personalized learning geared specifically to meet your childââ¬â¢s needs.
What are the benefits to CBE?
Answer: Personalized learning leads to improved academic success for students because what they are learning (content) is relevant to each student and tailored to their needs. Your student will learn at his or her own pace. It is proven that this type of learning model will lead to a better student.
If you have been following your childââ¬â¢s progress, you may noticed a more confident student. They really know what they have learned.
Tell me, what have you notice about your child? Are they less stressful? Do they seem to like school more?ÃÂ If you were still in school, would you have liked to learn in this way?
I encourage you to visit the school and talk with the teachers who are teaching in this manner. No matter what module a school is using, parent participation is key to learning. I canââ¬â¢t stress that enough: Get involved!
